Holy Monastery of Our Lady of Healing (Panagia Giatrissa)
The Monastery of Panagia Giatrissa is part of the Local Community of Kastania of the Municipality of East Mani, in the Regional Unit of Laconia.
According to folk tradition, the monastery was built on the site where the ruins of the ancient Temple of Athena lay. The pagan temple was probably turned into a Christian church in 382 A.D. A major building complex was gradually erected and later abandoned. It was probably restored as a Christian monastery in 1683.
The monastery is dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose icon is believed to be miraculous and is celebrated annually on 8 September.
The monastery status changed many times over the centuries due to war, famine, or economic difficulties. In the late 1990s the monastery was truly run down. Local donors took the initiative to redesign and renovate the monastery in the early 2000s. Significant architectural changes rendered the monastery more beautiful and functional, capable of managing the large number of visitors it welcomes. The monastic complex comprises a Byzantine-style church and a small, quaint chapel. The courtyard surrounding the monastery affords a panoramic view of its surrounding land.
