Β100 - Beehives

Bees choose to create their hives in places that are safe from harsh weather conditions and the sun. Tree hollows and deep cracks in rocks are ideal. This inspired the locals to create stone “boxes”, called therides, which served as homes for the bees. These “boxes” were placed alongside each other as well as vertically, reaching up to three vertical levels. The “roof” of the highest level was flat and covered with ceramic tiles or stone slates. The therides were made out of clay or stone. The front of each “box” was completely sealed, apart from a small hole at the bottom, through which the bees could enter and exit. In the back of each “box” there was a small wooden hatch through which the beekeeper could harvest the honey.
