Β75 - Maniot women sing song of mourning to honor their deceased relative

The traditional society of Mani was organized in clans. The members of the clans would be related from their father’s side. The Maniot way of life reflects how important the locals considered family ties; the members of the clan would live near each other and always near their clan tower. They would always attend each other’s important celebrations, such as weddings, baptisms, births, deaths and holidays. They would bury their kin in their clan’s cemetery. They would support each other whenever it was required, especially during vendettas. In South Mani the clans would collectively manage the sources of wealth (e.g. the sea salt-producing areas). In North Mani, however, there was a system of captains and each captain (chief of the clan) would have authority over specific regions.
