Monument to honour the heroes of the Greek War of Independence in Kastania
Gerasimos D. Kapsalis (1873-1962) had the inspiration to create this memorial and he sponsored it. The project was curated by the Kapsaleios Committee in 1967, based on the design by architect Gregoris Rizopoulos.
The monument commemorates the battles fought in this part of the Peloponnese and the fighters who took up arms here.
- In memory of Chief Korkodylos Kladas and his fighters, who fought against 10,000 Ottoman Turks in 1481.
- In memory of Military Chiefs Panagiotaros Venetsanakis and Konstantis Kolokotronis and their fighters, who bravely gave their lives during the great siege of Kastania by 14,000 Ottoman Turks in 1780.
- In memory of the Kastaniots who died fighting in more recent struggles defending the Nation.
